What is Hardness and is it Really Bad for You?

Updated: May 1, 2023

Hardness is the total amount of hard minerals like Calcium and Magnesium dissolved in the water. We usually measure hardness in PPM (parts per million) or Grains per gallon of hardness (1 grain per gallon = is 17.1 mg/L). How much hardness in your home is bad for you and can it ever be beneficial?

We usually talk about hardness being bad for you and your home, and that is true when the levels are high. So, how do we know?

In the city of Saskatoon, the hardness is usually measured in Grains per gallon. Once this measurement is performed, we can appreciate water that goes from 10-12 Grains per gallon or 171 - 205 mg/L.

Having calcium buildup, itchy skin, soaps that leave a residue or hardly produce any suds, white clothes losing their brightness after being washed, etc. is a giveaway that you may have hard water, and this is not good for you or your home. However, having small amounts of these hard minerals, especially magnesium, can be beneficial for consumption, we are talking about 0.5-1.15 grains per gallon or 8.3-19.4 mg/L.

I will leave an interesting video here from a Neuroscientist explaining this and how only a small presence of magnesium is beneficial for drinking only because it allows free Hydrogen molecules in the water. Once again, it is all about the science behind health! Let us help you with the best technology there is in Hydrogen machines. Book a free consultation now!
